boon's log 4209.06: Beans from abroad

Bali Beans...

Parents got back from Bali not too long ago and brought back some coffee beans. Decided to grind 'em and brew them today, since parents are in town r a short stop over before heading to the Mediterranean. Aromatic, not very strong and had a slightly nutty after-taste. Just nice for the afternoon, to accompany me while I blog. :)

Before the grind...

Oh, and while we were grocery shopping earlier this week, I bumped into a familiar "face" - one that I remember seeing when I was shopping for groceries in an Asian market near Stepney Green and Whitechapel...

Koka Instant Noodles...

It was a nice reminiscing those days. :)

And last but not the least, Deepavali Vaalthukkal! May this Diwali be a new beginning for great new things and may the inner light outshines all darkness.

boon's log 2409.04: Wear black, drink black, have fun

***Live report from Bayan Baru Old Town White Coffee***

IL and I decided give the "1Black afterwork Coffee" event at Bayan Baru Old Town White Coffee a try. The tag line for the night is "Wear Black, Drink Black, have fun." We (IL and I) had a lot of questions before going for the event - will there be barricades? will there be riot police? will we get caught like what happened in Ipoh - for wearing black and drinking kopi-o? Will the shop owner decide to close the shop or deny us entry into the shop? I even went to the extent of asking IL to wear grey so that she will be able to bail me out in case I get caught! Haha!

Anyway, it turned out to be a rather peaceful night. About 15 or so of us turned up. The "unmentioned intention" of the gathering is basically a "silent protest" against the way that things have turned out in Perak recently - the so-called death of democracy. Besides that we all made new friends and vouched to meet up again.

One funny thing we noticed was the shop manager - he was pretty nervous the entire night - he kept taking photos of our table with his mobile phone and kept a watchful eye at us in case anything happens. I guess we kinda stressed him out a little bit tonight. Hopefully he will come to accept that we are just gathering like any other group of people - just that we are wearing black and drinking black.

Notice anyone in black t-shirts?

It's all about the coffee...

Well, it's time to go home.

boon's log 1809.01: In the mail...

Got this interesting fwded email when I opened up my mailbox this morning while sipping through my Starbucks black coffee. According to the email, this picture was taken in Miri, Sarawak.

Starbucks, Miri, Sarawak. (credit and acknowledgement to the person who took this photo)

Not sure how true it is yet, but at least it's got a Malaysian flag hanging outside of the store, for one. So we can be sure it is somewhere in rural areas of Malaysia. 10 pts to the folks that started this establishment and I sure hope that their coffee is as good as (if not better than) the original Starbucks.

I wonder if other opportunists in the area will be competitive enough to take up the challenge and open up a "Biji Kopi dan Daun Teh" down the road from Setarbak Kopi... ;P

Oh, and notice the tombstone shop next to it? :) Talk about location, location, location...
