boon's log 3206.04: Marketing gimmick...

I saw this ad regarding the Gen.2 1.6 MME Edition. From the picture, it looks cool, right? Check out the tinting on the car. That's like super duper black, man. I guess WYSIWYG does not really apply in Malaysia. Of course they have those disclaimer that the actual vehicle may vary from what is shown on the newspaper. But why put a picture of a model that you do not intend or cannot deliver. Other car ads put that same disclaimer because some of the "legal" modifications to the cars may not be available due to stock availability or something like that(e.g. spoilers, fog lamps, body kits, etc) - but not "illegal" modifications... Why not take a step further? Why not put the picture of a Porsche and smack a Proton emblem on it and then put the same disclaimer "Actual vehicle may very from what is shown on the newspaper"...

Anyways, for those who wants to know what JPJ's guidelines are with regards to window tinting (Cermin Gelap), click here. All the while I thought cermin meant mirror, but seems like it works for windows as well.... and I thought windows is "tingkap." whatever...

Anyway, I decided to take a dive into their website to look more into this... and found the following...

Hand Assembled...

I'm sorry hand assembled??? Is this supposed to increase my confidence level in our Proton cars? I'm sorry - not that I am biased, but many of us know where our national car manufacturer stands in terms of quality and reliability. Leaks, noises, more leaks, malfunctions... etc. We've either experienced it ourselves or heard so many countless stories from our friends and relatives. And individually numbered? Hmm... the chassis of every vehicle is also individually numbered as well, ain't it?

The website also has a counter as to how many people are really interested in our Proton's MME edition, which was launched earlier this week...

Whoa! There's only 200 of them! There are still 199 left (after one week). So, take your time...

boon out...

hahaha... after one week, only sold one unit... man at this rate, no wonder Proton is going bust...

On another note, Proton Assembly plant is supposedly the most canggih among all the Malaysian car assemblers. They call them self Car Manufacturer and not car assembler like Naza & Perodua, the CEO distintly make the difference in one of the interview. They do put themself higher than the other Malaysian Car Assemblers and they do have the reason. The Proton line is filled with automations, almost equivalent to the top japanese car manufacturers. Naza plant on the other hand, is 100% hand assembly, and we can visit the plant for team building someday.

And so, when Proton says that the car is hand assembled, it just means that they are taking a step back. Ironic isn't it.

Maybe because Ferrari is also 100% hand assembled, and Proton wants to compare themselves to that.
